Why Choose Us? Important Things You Should Know

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Yes, our Training Series was created to exceed minimum Medicare requirments.

Pat Carver began offering her materials to hospices in the Fall of 2007.  As part of a team establishing a new hospice, Pat realized there were very few resources available for training new volunteers.  Those that were available were very clinical and not really appropriate for volunteers.  So, she took a chance and developed a training resource written specifically for hospice volunteers.  She went a step further and suggested that volunteers could engage in self-study for the foundational portion of their orientation, with follow up sessions to further explore the information. When the Coordinator meets with new volunteers, they are able to focus on fleshing out the materials in experiential ways, and building strong relationships with the new volunteers.

In addition to our new volunteer orientation, The Hospice Volunteer Training Series, we offer additional courses that can be utilized as one part of speciality role training, such as Bereavement, Vigil  or Tuck-in programs.  Other courses include Boundaries and Abuse.  Any of these courses can be used to customize the new volunteer orientation, or can be offered on their own as in-services.  Additional in-service courses include Dementia, Safety and Confidentialtiy, which are reviews and similar to what is covered in the Training Series.  We also create a new edition of our Hospice Volunteer Review annually.  It’s a competency check and review, plus it includes questions related to retention and recruitment.  The format is consistent from year to year, but we set it up with different questions, a different order of topics and have it printed in a new color.

We are in Pacific Time.  You may call or email anytime.  If we are not available to take your call, please leave a message.  Someone will get back to you as soon as possible, generally same day, but sometimes next day.  Email is often a great way to reach out as it allows for convenient responses.

Segment titles include:  Welcome, Mission, History, Confidentiality, Volunteer Information,   Care & Comfort, Death & Dying, Grief & Loss, Patient Rights, Communication, Spirituality, Safety & Infection Control, Family, Ethics, Alzheimer’s Disease.  Additionally, other topics are mentioned within the training, such as Boundaries and Abuse, but don’t have an entire titled segment.

The best option for training new volunteers depends upon your budget as well as the needs of your Coordinator and your volunteers.  That’s why we offer options – a simple Video Portal paired with hard copy quizzes or a student Workbook, as well as an e-learning format with online quizzes and downloadable certificates.  Either way, it’s the same content presented in different formats.

Pat Carver created The Hospice Volunteer Training Series between 2004 and 2006, making it available to Hospices in 2007.  Since then she has updated the content as needed and created new courses.  She established her first on-line video portal in 2010 and her e-learning portal in 2014.  This was well before Covid when remote learning became the norm!  But, Pat felt that busy adults would be more likely to volunteer if they could conveniently manage the hospice training requirements.  New volunteers appreciated the flexible training.  Volunteer Coordinators appreciated the consistency and flexibility that self-study provided.
